I am sure that they would want to go public in order to get a
radical increase in their funding. Positive findings would make
SETI the biggest scientific gravy train of all time.

The question is rather whether they would be allowed to go
public: the military, economic and strategic implications might
be immense. Is anybody aware of standing orders and protocols in
the event of positive findings? These might be so draconian that
there would be a strong incentive to keep a success under wraps
and within SETI. The excuse for this would be along the lines of
"Oh well, we weren't at all sure about these signals, and we've
been analysing them for the past seven years to make sure they
aren't an RF artefact occasioned by the variable filtering
effect of a rotating cloud of gas between us and a cataclysmic
variable system lurking 'behind' the star in question..."
