John Martin saw a descending round object, dark and backlit by the sun, which he described as attaining the apparent _size_ (not shape) of a "large saucer". It isn't 100% clear but he probably only used the "saucer" comparison because of its circularity. He doesn't say that he thought the round object was actually flat or dished.
