In his 1967 typed and signed statement Baruna wrote: "Comvem esclarecer, que o grupo de civis se encontrrava a bordo a convite de Marinha para fzerem pesquisas submarinas e tirar fotografias de fauna submarina da Ilha." "It should be made clear that the group of civilians was on board at the Navy's invitation for submarine research and to take photographs of underwater fauna of the island." I expect there are other relevant statements in the contemporary press coverage in addition to the few I quoted, but until someone publishes scans and/or transcripts of all this stuff in an accessible form (preferrably in the original Portuguese) it's hard to excavate.
