It's surprising how many "new" fads, fancies and even basic technologies/exploitations can be seen in earlier civilizations - and, as Jared Diamond et all have opined, some of them should be a warning to us. You probably know of Ray Kurzweil's "Singularity" www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,2048138-1,00.html where he forecasts that pretty soon humans (or more likely a wealthy elite) will be uploading their personalities into potentially immortal computer-based devices. Yet, if the rest of us are left as we are, those 'immortals' will need their digital homes to be hidden, safe-guarded and tended by loyal (highly paid?) humans - maybe on the promise of joining the immortals as and when. Obviously there no specific examples of that in recorded history, however the general outline - a long-lived 'association' passing on inherited responsibilities in utmost secrecy - does have a recognizable ring to it (see R.A.W?). What is the next logical step? Clearly it's better to be 'free' than tied to a computer memory, no matter how spacious. And John C. Wright, in his Golden Oecumene series: www.bewilderingstories.com/issue110/john_wright_rev.html describes the results - of 'freeing' electronic personalities to roam around the (local) universe - very well, and dramatically to boot. As these folk are electronic - mere patterns of disturbance in the outermost electrons of atoms of air, earth or water - a primitive could only detect their presence by a few tell-tale signs: a sudden chill (as the pattern draws energy from its surroundings), glitches, drop-outs & malfunctions of simple electrical and electronic equipment (ditto), and interference with the thoughts of nearby animals (ditto - inducing fear reactions), some long lasting and maybe permanent, due to alteration of the brain's electro-chemical states.
