My information comes from standard academic histories of the
Mars-canal controversy.

It should be noted that Schiaparelli's behavior - manifested in
his sympathy to Lowell's theories about a dying race of Martian
engineers - makes no sense if you argue he was seeking to draw a
distinction such as the one you suggest. At no point in the
discussion, which extended over something like three decades,
did Schiaparelli (who died in 1910) interject to protest, "No,
you dimwits, I was talking about _channels_!"

Moreover, even before Lowell appeared on the scene in the mid-
1890s, Schiaparelli's supporters were talking of "canals." For
example, in her 1885 book Popular Astronomy During the
Nineteenth Century, Agnes Clerke wrote, "The 'canals' of Mars
are an actually existent and permanent phenomenon."
