Not that it is a big issue but then >again Lowell ran with it. For years I read that the translation >was misunderstood and that canals came from channels (canali). My information comes from standard academic histories of the Mars-canal controversy. It should be noted that Schiaparelli's behavior - manifested in his sympathy to Lowell's theories about a dying race of Martian engineers - makes no sense if you argue he was seeking to draw a distinction such as the one you suggest. At no point in the discussion, which extended over something like three decades, did Schiaparelli (who died in 1910) interject to protest, "No, you dimwits, I was talking about _channels_!" Moreover, even before Lowell appeared on the scene in the mid- 1890s, Schiaparelli's supporters were talking of "canals." For example, in her 1885 book Popular Astronomy During the Nineteenth Century, Agnes Clerke wrote, "The 'canals' of Mars are an actually existent and permanent phenomenon."
