It suddenly struck me that, from photographic evidence, Mars has an extremely changeable surface, even viewed over recent years. Which, given the evidence of partly submerged networks of "Tubes" covering much of the Mars terrain - see www.perceptions.couk.com/magic3.html#start could mean that when Schiaparelli and Lowell were observing there _were_ visible networks on the surface of Mars.
