I was probably thinking of the recurring disease of flared trousers (bell-bottom jeans etc) and maybe 'big hair' for women? In fact I've part-supported your view in a page on the evolutionary benefits of 'fashion': www.perceptions.couk.com/fashion.html nb. a sharp reader might find some of my weaknesses in it: i.e. a Danish colleague in love with Italian girls (as a genus), passed on a liking for Gigliola, who was in her late folk- singing stage while I was there - see 'Innocenza'.
