Absurdities in ufology are only one, and (since >ufologists are marginalized and powerless) inconsequential, >result. It's worse than that Jerry. You are perfectly right to point to the human propensity for intellectual laziness. All the ammunition is there, ready and waiting, for those who would exploit this weakness: major world religions that purport to encompass all significant truth in a single book (never mind that the book is more than a thousand years old); Marxist and Free Market dogma that 'solve' the problems of poverty and need with just a few simple formulae; the strangely unaccountable scientific superstition that a 'theory of everything' might be 'elegantly' expressed in a single equation; politicians who can win elections with a single word promise, without ever properly specifying what they are going to 'change', why how and when. And then we come to ufology, where the most intransigent set of perplexing, contradictory phenomena confronts us. Should we be surprised to find that this field is beset with the most appalling array of simplistic quackery? Should we be surprised that so little comparative weight is given to the work of those (to instantiate a few: Vallee, Dolan, yourself even) who make an intelligent and intellectually honest attempt to engage the data and make sense of it? In context, I would suggest that it should come as no surprise at all. Gerald O'Connell http://www.gacoc.demon.co.uk Listen to 'Strange Days...
