One was by finding spectrum readings of 'impossible' complex elements burning in a medium-young star; that is, elements which couldn't have been produced by the star itself. Davies envisaged that happening when ET or its robots had mined-out a solar.system and dumped their waste products into the primary, but you could also use that method as a simple and quite long-lasting beacon.
