"Searching for microbes and radio signals in space," declares the most recent challenge, "is not enough." Because that's how the White House attempted, in October, to acknowledge public interest in ET - don't worry, space probes and radiotelescopes are busily scanning the cosmos for evidence. The White House started this mess in September, when it established its We The People petition website. It essentially invited every Tom Dick & Harry with a grievance to put it in writing and get an on-the-record reaction - providing they could collect enough autographs within a 30-day span. When thousands of people signed in wanting the feds to disclose what it knew about the "extraterrestrial presence", the unhappy chore of mollifying the UFO crowd fell to the Office of Science and Technology Policy. But instead of going away, at least two additional and more sharply focused petitions are rapping on the door again. And one - by UFO historian Richard Dolan and screenwriter/producer Bryce Zabel - hopes to make the 1975-76 Church Committee CIA hearings look like a warmup act.
