Let me stress this is not intended as a criticism of any fellow
ufologist in particular. When I say I've wondered the same thing
myself, I am making a general point whose purpose, like
Michael's, is to raise some needed awareness.

I recall vividly an experience from a number of years ago, when
I attended a conference at which, as I learned too late, a
leading speaker was a notorious Canadian neo-Nazi who believed
flying saucers to be Hitler's creation and ongoing operation -
and that was his _sanest_ belief. My wife and I were shocked to
discover that most other participants, though not themselves any
more crazy or bigoted than the bulk of their fellow citizens,
seemed unable to grasp why this man's presence should have been
deemed unacceptable in any gathering of decent humans.

The only explanation I've been able to come up for this
dispiriting blindness is that many in our midst are oblivious to
the larger world. It's also worth noting that such ignorance
enables UFO-centric conspiracy theories contending, for example,
that ET visitation and the cover-up of same are the hidden
motivators of history and current events. If these notions
aren't exactly in ufology's mainstream, sometimes they're closer
to it than they should be.
