Subject: Types Of Civilization [was: Mind Control]

Hello List

This is to do with that last thread - hopefully aimed at
estimating our ability to recognize and maybe communicate with
real alien `intelligent' species.

You've probably read of Nikolai Kardashev's rating of possible
civilizations -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kardashev_scale

which is based on energy-control and range of influence:
basically a Type I controls a planet's energy, Type II a solar
system's (inc. the Sun) and Type III controls a galaxy's [some
folk have added refinements or gone further - like one chap
suggests a Type Omega which controls a Universe].

In view of Ray Kurzweil's expected or upcoming Singularity,
which he seems to think will enable Transhumanism -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transhumanism

it would also seem necessary to rate civilizations on their
ability to recognize, quantify and `control' (in the nicer
sense) the content, motivations and workings of their own minds;
otherwise that `singularity' could be a terrible no-way-back
mistake.

More importantly maybe, a civilization fit and indeed able to
contact and communicate with other intelligent species should at
least qualify as a Type I - able to control their own minds.

As you've probably guessed, my view is that we don't yet
qualify.

Cheers

Ray D
