This discovery - that we don't even know for sure what life-forms can live on Earth - underlines once again Clarke's First Law: "When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right; when he states that something is impossible, he is probably wrong". We can all remember people - many quoted on this List - laying down the law as to what life could or could not exist in the universe; with much stress on oxygen, carbon and liquid water.
