Hello Ray, List,

Yes, the group with the vested interest was the Republican
movement. What other power-base could possibly benefit from
exposing the facts?

And how many of your records are media sourced?

But not always successfully.

Setting aside historical media-driven expos=E9s such as Watergate,
the Iran-contra affair, Monica Lewinski, etc. recent UK media
driven problems for the UK government include the Saudi arms
pay-offs and the MP expenses furore, both of which were fought
against tooth and nail by the government. MP's expenses are now
public knowledge, and I suspect the Saudi dealing will also soon
be - see:

(note the mixed media reaction there)

There are instances when the media co-operate with the
government, but they require the acceptance of the media that
there is good reason for hiding the facts, such as Prince
Harry's tour of duty in Afghanistan, and some delayed reporting
during the Falklands and Gulf wars.

That is not always the case though, I recall an expose in one of
the Sunday papers during the 1970's revealing how the army in
Northern Ireland was triggering IRA bombs as they were being
built, killing the bomb-makers.

Once it got in the papers, the value of the operation was
negated, meaning more bombs reaching their targets and more
soldiers and civilians getting killed by them. Thank you, News
of the World.

Hardly a controlled media.
