Why I Support Alien Abduction Study

Subject: Why I Support Alien Abduction Study

List,

Over recent months I've posted a few times on the subject of the
study into the alien abduction phenomenon being carried out by
psychologists at Goldsmiths College, University of London.

Given the fact that Professor Chris French (a confessed sceptic
on the ETH) is undertaking this study, some people have
expressed surprise that I've commended this project and actively
encouraged abductees and experiencers to take part. I wanted to
explain my thinking on this. There are three main reasons why I
support this initiative.

Firstly, whatever Chris French's personal views, he and his team
are being scrupulous so far as methodology and protocols are
concerned. He's consulted with parapsychologists, ufologists and
experiencers. Witness confidentiality is paramount, and
participants can use pseudonyms if they wish.

Secondly, ufologists often complain that scientists don't take
an interest in UFOs or alien abductions. I believe it would send
the wrong message if ufologists complain about one of the rare
occasions when the scientific community is taking an interest.
This is, after all, proper science. Data collected from
abductees will be compared with data from a control sample
matched on such factors as gender and age. The intention is to
publish the results in scientific journals.

Thirdly, I believe that taking part in this study will be
beneficial for the abductees and experiencers concerned. A
common factor in alien abduction reports is the loss of control.
Setting aside judgement on the true nature of the phenomenon, be
it physical or psychological, those involved feel disempowered.
Feedback I've had from participants suggests they feel
empowered, and welcome the opportunity to be proactive as
opposed to reactive.

The original timescales for the study have slipped a little, and
there's still time for people to get involved. UK-based
abductees and experiencers wishing to take part, or wanting
further information, should contact Julia Santomauro. You can
email her at apru.nul or telephone her on 020 7919 7171,
extension 4389.

Best wishes,

Nick Pope
