I once knew a man who was a cook in the U.S. Army during World
War II. He was the father of a former girlfriend of mine.

I asked him if he'd ever been ordered to do guard duty, and he
said it happened all the time. If guards were needed, officers
would show up without warning, and pick the first enlisted men
they saw.

Skeptics could argue that they wouldn't have done that for such
a high-security matter, but that's just conjecture. We ought to
find out more about how things actually worked.
