Fires don't spread too well in a desert. They generally put
themselves out.

I have advanced this hypothesis myself in the past. I accept
that they were flares, but why on this night of all nights? And
why in an area so visible to a huge portion of the West Valley,
when such has not occurred before or since, that I can recall.
And why the delay in 'fessing up to it? "Oh, _that_ flare drop!
Oh, yeah, that was us" (months after the fact). And why does it
seem like there is a "spoiler episode" to every major UFO event?
You show me Area 51, I'll show you Bob Lazar. You show me
Bentwaters, I'll show you Larry Warren. You show me Roswell,
I'll show you Glen Dennis (and a host of others). You show me
Gulf Breeze, I'll show you...well, you-know-who...

Just a hypothesis, mind you...

This was related to the 8:30 sightings, which may have been the
"signal" where the flares were the purposeful "noise."

Disclaimer: All this happened during my "sabbatical" from
Ufology, during which time I read very little on the subject, so
I don't claim a thorough knowledge of the Phoenix Lights
