I personally think that trying to attribute any sort of rational human motivation to these bugs is a risky proposition. Not knowing any other way, it's hard for us, I believe, to think "alien" enough to get a clue as to what these things are up to. Along with that, given our own surprisingly limited perceptual abilities, it could be that they're waving their version of a red flag at us and we're too stupid, or whatever, and just not able to recognize it. I've also tried to imagine what possible biological or social advantage they might have with more direct contact, and I can't think of any. Other than as a minor curiosity, we really might not have that much to offer. Even our planet might not have anything that extraordinary to investigate or exploit, if that's what they wanted to do. Why invade Earth for its gold when there are entire planets elsewhere completely made of the stuff? Or they can just make it themselves out of lead? So you see a few little scout ships once in a while, just to check up on us. No need for anything else. Like walking past a fish tank. If they all die, too bad, whatever. Plenty of others in the galaxy.
