FIRST NATIONAL MUNCASTER PARANORMAL CONFERENCE

Saturday 27th - Sunday 28th March 2004

10.00am - 5.30pm

Presentations will be given on a variety of fields such as,
Apparitions & Hauntings, Out-of-Body and Near-Death-Experiences,
and UFO's. Plus Dr. Jason Braithwaite, Muncaster's resident
apparitional expert and director of scientific investigations
for 12 years, will be presenting some of his results for the
first time at a national conference.

Muncaster Castle has a long reputation as a haunted location,
and Dr Braithwaite=92s research currently involves exploring the
possibility that electro-magnetic fields are responsible for
causing some of the strange experiences reported by tourists and
staff-members alike. A Research Fellow in the Brain Sciences
department at Birmingham University, Dr Braithwaite is
collecting data with the M.A.D.S (magnetic anomaly detection
system), a custom-built computerised system recently installed
at the Castle. The system will be available for inspection
during the Conference.

Speakers include Lionel Fanthorpe, Professor Archie Roy and
Philip Mantle, amongst many others.

Ticket prices are =A330 for one day or =A345 for two days. This
includes free access to Muncaster Castle and Gardens and free
welcoming wine reception on Friday 26th March in the Castle.
This will give everyone the chance to meet the speakers and chat
to others also interested in the paranormal in the glorious
surroundings of the Great Hall.

The ticket price also includes buffet lunch during the day and
tea/coffee/juice and cakes at the end of the day.

Accommodation and evening meals are not included in the price
but there are many local places that can provide excellent and
affordable accommodation and food. Early booking is recommended.

Peter Frost-Pennington

Peter Frost-Pennington, the current owner of Muncaster Castle,
will give a welcoming speech and talk about the long and
fascinating history of the Castle.

Dr Jason Braithwaite

Dr Jason Braithwaite is a Research Fellow in the Behavioural
Brain Sciences Centre at the University of Birmingham. He has
been studying Muncaster=92s alleged hauntings for over a decade
and is the Director of Research there. He will speak about the
varied ghostly phenomena which has been reported in the Castle
and grounds.

Lionel Fanthorpe

Lionel Fanthorpe is well-known to TV viewers as the presenter of
Channel 4=92s Fortean TV, and has written many books about the
world of the unexplained. He is also President of the
Association for the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena and
President of the British UFO Research Association. He and
Patricia have investigated unsolved mysteries of all kinds at
first hand for over thirty years -- and his talk today ranges
over a wide selection of them.

Professor Archie Roy

Professor Roy is an Emeritus Prof of Astronomy at Glasgow
University. He has investigated paranormal phenomena for over 40
years, and is well experienced in "hands on" case
investigations. He is the founder of the Scottish Society for
Psychical Research and a founding member of PRISM.

Professor Roy=92s talk today is titled "Overshadowing, Obsession
and Possession". He will speak about well authenticated cases
which relating to the title described. These cases will show -
 without question- that some form of paranormality is involved.

Tricia Robertson

Tricia Robertson is the Vice President of the Scottish Society
for Psychical Research and a founding member of PRISM. She has
investigated all aspects of the alleged paranormal for over 20
years. She and Professor Roy are joint authors of 3 well
received, papers published in the peer reviewed JSPR relating to
a statistical analysis of statements made by mediums in
conditions up to and including triple blind.

Tricia=92s talk today is titled "Striking a Happy Medium" (no
violence involved) relating to mediumship and paranormal events.
She will speak about various forms of evidence relating to the
survival of human personality after bodily death. The emphasis
is on balancing the science, the phenomena and the sceptical
viewpoint.

Philip Mantle

Philip Mantle is a ufo researcher with over 20 years of
experience. he is an international author, lecturer and
broadcaster on the subject of UFO's. He is the co-author of two
books: Without Consent (with Carl Nagaitis) a study of alien
abduction accounts in the UK, and Beyond Roswell (with Michael
Hesemann) a full account of the UFO crash at Roswell in l947 and
the alien autopsy film.

His presentation today will be 'Alien Abductions in the UK'.
This presentation will look at such encounters from the UK only
and some of the theories put forward to try and explain them.

Dr. Jason Braithwaite

Speaking about the M.A.D.S (Magnetic Anomaly Detection System)
and its role in paranormal research. This system has been
custom-designed for the purpose and is currently being used in
research at Muncaster Castle and other locations in Cumbria.

Dr Hugh Pincott

Dr Hugh Pincott is a Chartered Chemist and market research
analyst who has undertaken much paranormal research in past
decades. A former Honorary Secretary of the Society for
Psychical Research, he is currently Chairman of ASSAP.

Dr Pincott believes that alleged paranormal events usually rely
on a high degree of value judgement in their interpretation,
often determined by preconceived ideas and beliefs. He assesses
the weight of reliable evidence for such happenings as ghosts,
poltergeists, time-slips, coincidences, anomalous photographs,
etc. He explains why voluntary research organisations have such
an important part to play in the study of these experiences.

The Conference will end with a Panel composed of Speakers,
open to questions from the audience.
