Greetings Dick, Nick, List

In relation to references for the figures supplied by Nick, it
may be helpful to note the following extracts from Hansard (the
official record of questions in the UK's Parliament). These
extracts may also be of interest as they give an outline of the
explanations advanced by the Ministry of Defence for the
relevant sightings.

The figures for 1966-1967 and surrounding years have been given
in reply to various Parliamentary questions, including one on 22
January 1968 (Hansard, House of Commons, Volume 757, Column 40)
and another on 16 October 1973 (Hansard, House of Commons,
Volume 861, Written Answers column 4). The relevant answers
confirm the figures given by Nick and also give the numbers for
1959 (22), 1971 (379) and 1972 (201). The answers also purport
to provide breakdowns of the explanations of the sightings.
These breakdowns were, according to one internal Ministry of
Defence memo, based on "somewhat haphazard allocation" of UFO
reports to various categories. (The relevant memo is at Public
Record Office File Reference AIR 2/19086 document E21, undated
but written in the context of correspondence during the summer
of 1975).

For ease of reference, the text of the 2 particularly relevant
parliamentary questions is set out below. (The text of these
parliamentary questions, and others that may be of interest
(because they relate to 1966-1967 and/or numbers of sightings
for other years), are included in the preliminary draft of a
Hansard Working Document available online at:

22 January 1968 - House of Commons Volume 757 column 40
 "Unidentified Flying Objects
Mr Edward M Taylor asked the Secretary of State for Defence how
many reports of unidentified flying objects were received in
1967; how many of these reports were subsequently shown to have
a natural explanation; and if he will make a statement.

Mr Merlyn Rees: The total number of reports received in 1967
reflects a wave of public interest in UFOs, reaching a peak
towards the end of the year. The analysis of the reports
published below shows that, as in previous years, the vast
majority were found to have mundane explanations ; the remainder
of the reports contained insufficient investigation but nothing
to suggest that they related to incidents materially different
in kind from those that were explained.

16 October 1973 - House of Commons Volume 861 written answers
column 4 "Unidentified Flying Objects Mr Bishop asked the
Minister of State for Defence how many reports of unidentified
flying objects were received for each year since 1967,
categorised into numbers of satellites, debris, balloons,
celestial objects, meteorological and natural phenomena, &c ;
how many were shown to have a natural explanation ; what action
his department takes to monitor UFOs ; and if he will make a
statement.

Mr Kershaw: All reports of sightings of unidentified flying
objects received from Service and civilian sources alike are
studied for any possible air defence implications. Reports
received in the period 1967 to 1972 are considered to have
originated in the followings ways:

[Table with columns entitled, from left to right, untitled,
"total", "satellites", "balloons", "celestial objects",
"Meteorological and natural phenomena", "aircraft",
"miscellaneous".

The contents of each row, from left to right are as follows:

1967 362 57 42 26 19 150 22
1968 280 65 10 36 3 114 30
1969 228 37 9 27 19 101 17
1970 181 9 8 31 16 97 5
1971 379 28 11 33 62 160 27
1972 201 7 28 17 2 128 5

In the remaining cases insufficient information was provided for
the likely cause to be ascertained. I do not think there is any
aspect of this subject which merits a statement at present."

I hope this is of assistance.

Kind Regards,

Isaac Koi
