I think the short-term effects might render the long-term effects irrelevant, from the human perspective. If only we'd followed the Brits' lead, and completed Moonbase Alpha back in '99. Seriously though, I question the accuracy of the statement,"We're all set to protect Mother Earth...". Since the moon is such a small target compared to our big blue marble, it would make sense to build "escape vehicles" there. Hundreds or thousands of them. In case of an imminent impact on earth, we'd all be shuttled to the moon, and our waiting escape pods. Launch from the moon would be far less problematic, less stressful on the passengers, and would require much less fuel. More realistically, I imagine the phrase "We'd all be shuttled..." might be a bit over-optimistic. Kyle
