Quote: "A minor legend in American folklore concerns the stools
supplied to forest-fire watchtowers. The stools stand high off
the ground to provide a refuge for the fire-warden if attacked
by a ball of lightning. The theory is that the ball will snap
around the legs like a terrier and then, frustrated, depart
through a door or window" Unquote

But Lane goes on to say "experts" (c.1945) denied the existence
of ball-lightning, quoting K Berger (Swiss - an `acknowledged
authority' on lightning), J.H. Hagenguth of General Electric,
and W. J. Humphreys (Oak Ridge NL?) who continued to deny ball-
lightning even after the pioneering Professor Jensen of Nebraska
Wesleyan University (sic?) had taken photographs of them, while
NASA was collating reports of them and after Oak Ridge's own
staff had 515 witnesses of ball-lightning (NASA's own staff had
180 witnesses, some of multiple ball-lightning events).

So, how come the fire-wardens' bosses knew all about ball-
lightning _before_ the experts?

And, as the exact same thing happened with meteorites (the
"experts" also denied them when they were reported by us
"peasants"), why do we bother listening to the experts on
matters of "unknown or worrying" phenomena?

The "experts" record seems to be a darn sight worse than ours.
