Maybe I've read too many berserker stories, but the longer I
live, the more I feel like we ought to be shutting up about
ourselves and laying a little low. Of course the odds of an
intelligent civilization finding this probe or the Voyagers is
essentially zero, but...

Of all the reasons I've heard why we haven't detected signals
from other intelligences, the one that makes the most sense to
me is that they're purposely keeping quiet. I think if you
watch any of the nature programs on TV, you can't help but feel
that what nature is, above all else, is one big smorgasbord with
everything eating everything else. I just get a gut feeling (so
to speak) that if there is other life out there in the universe,
it's gonna be operating in the same way. Predator and prey.
Yeah, we might luck out and meet a species that has something
similar to our own sense of compassion, who might help us
survive until we can get our technological act together, but I
wouldn't bet on it.

The more I think about it, the more I view these aliens as a
real threat.

If there turns out to be nothing to worry about, great. But
just on the off chance that the nastier critters out there are
scouting around for fresh meat, I really think we should conduct
much of our exploration (particularly extra-solar exploration)
with as much stealth as possible.
