Hello Tom,

The EXIF data on the camera indicated 14:52. EXIF data is
notoriously unreliable, and of course the camera clock may not
have been set correctly. Therefore, in keeping with the
photographer's recollection that he took the image "about 2pm",
I've been working on the assumption that the camera clock was
one hour fast, making the actual time 13:52 local.

Ideally someone would be able to check with the photographer on
this point, but I would assume that he was indicating local time
(GMT+11 hours, including DST)

Where did you get those figures Tom? I've been using the
following figures [http://aa.usno.navy.mil/]

13:52: Sun azimuth: 287.6=B0, Sun altitude: 55.1=B0
14:52: Sun azimuth: 275.6=B0, Sun altitude: 43.4=B0

All the best,

Dan Bright
