The light was seen by people from as far as Lightning Ridge, Gulgong, Oberon and Young. Callers to ABC Central West and Western Plains this morning described the light as a slow moving shooting star travelling west to east, low on the horizon. "Yeah, it was very low and very, very bright, just a bright green object ... might be one of those Martians," one caller said. "It started to break up, red pieces started to come out the back of it, then it disappeared," said another. "I was right beside the shearing shed and it was so bright it was like the truck was coming with full beam on," said a third caller. John Smith from the CSIRO Radio Telescope at Parkes says the light was most likely a meteor burning lower in the atmosphere than normal.
