Larry, your logic, as always, is impeccable, but I'm still
uneasy about our tactical assumptions and our (single) strategy.

Situation

- several types of 'visitors' have been here for quite a while
and choose to show themselves in tantalizing and confusing
glimpses that follow no general pattern (except contradictory
ones?).

Tactics

- our tactical assumption of 'sensible' technology. We're facing
a mixed bag of possible friends/foes almost certainly
years/generations/millennia ahead of us (statistical
probabilities). We surely daren't assume any limit on the
technology available to them - no matter how 'magical'.

Here's quote from two sharp thinkers:

"An advanced technology (say a million years old, or five
hundred million, compared to the two hundred year history of
'advanced' human technology) will be able to make, distribute,
and hide artifacts that we cannot begin to imagine."

--Professors Jack Cohen & Ian Stewart "Evolving the Alien"
ISBN 0-09-187927-2

So I'm uneasy about our tactics - it's like a naked savage
deciding to punch-out an armored brigade _and_ a regiment of
hypnotists.

Strategy

- the only strategy we (our leaders) seem to have is: Compete or
capitulate!

That's what _we'd_ expect of a primitive animal. And that's what
we're demonstrating (and broadcasting) for all to see and hear.
"Exploitative consumerism - red in tooth and claw" - whether
it's called capitalism, communism, facism or any other political
"ism".

I'm tempted to forecast useful contact for some who can
demonstrate and broadcast logic/empathy/altruism (quite a
package) to the _really_ advanced ones. Maybe it's already
happening - neither parties are likely to tell CNN.

Sting-in-tail

Of course, that might not help those in Puerto Rico or S.
America who seem to be hosting visitors (or their pets) almost
as primitive and bloodthirsty as our leaders.

Best regards

Ray D
