The photographer states that he was taking shots facing "east
and west" (Hearldsun: http://tinyurl.com/39jy4)

Yes. I double checked my figures earlier and the air turned blue
when I realised my error. I just sent the corrections prior to
reading your post. Doh!!

There is a facility to changing that to 1-min increments, which
is how I got my final figures (almost the same as yours: Azm
287.6, Alt: 55.1). This is for 13:52 local time, and assumes
that the photographer's statement of "about 2pm" was correct
(meaning the EXIF embedded data is one hour fast. This has
nothing to do with daylight saving time as I mistakenly alluded
to in a previous post -- when you're having one of those

If, however, the EXIF data was correct (and the photographer was
wrong in his statement), then local time would be 14:52
Azm=275.6 and Alt=43.4)

I've emailed a contact of mine in Australia and am awaiting his
response. I'll let you know if he's willing to take a day trip
out there.

Best to all,
