Royce and listfolk:

It is an unending source of wonder to me why, in this
information age where educational and professional claims are
easily investigatable, some persons still think they can get by
for long with resume inflation. This is a problem that afflicts
not just ufology - by a long shot. In recent years we've seen a
spate of these in all areas of human endeavor, some even
involving prominent academics (e.g., the Revolutionary War
historian Joseph Ellis, who falsely claimed to have served in
Vietnam and experienced combat; in reality, he was teaching at
West Point at the time).

Where ufology is concerned, something about crashed-disc tales
that gets the hoaxer's juices flowing. I guess the principle is
that if you're going to lie, best lie about something big.
