Well, to be honest, I had decided to get involved in one last
project having to do with the Walton case. My family and I have
rented a house in Show Low, AZ for the summer, and I wanted to
take advantage of my closeness to the site to look into some new
information on the case. I've been out of the field for so long,
however, that I thought it would be a good idea to join Lists
such as this one to catch up on what's happening in general.

Sadly, it looks as if my project isn't going to happen now. You
are no doubt aware of the huge wildfires taking place in our
state right now; I'm sorry to report that one of them is
threatening the Turkey Springs area, where the Walton incident
took place. It may already be gone. Right now I'm in Phoenix,
but tomorrow, if the roads are open, I'm going to drive back up
to Show Low and get the word on the status of the site.

Oh, yeah, my wife's up there, too, so I should probably check on
her safety as well.... <g> Seriously, it looks as if the fire
will miss Show Low itself, if the winds don't shift.

Why did I leave... let's see... let me count the ways... <g> I
guess the main reason was the quagmire the field fell into in
the late eighties/early nineties. The majority of cases and
stories that emerged were hoaxes, many investigators I had
confidence in began defending spurious cases, the degree of
vituperation increased geometrically, the amount of
disinformation began to explode, and I just got an overall bad
taste in my mouth. It seemed I had come along at a time when the
gentlemanly pursuit of Ufology was at an ebb after the deaths of
Hynek, Keyhoe and McDonald, and it was no longer fun. Worse, I
was afraid that if I stuck around any longer, I would become a
casualty myself, either being duped by some disinfo-operative or
jumping on a bandwagon that turned out to be a hoax.

I also gradually came to realize that I had gotten out of the
field what I came into it for: a form of closure. My curiosity
had been satisfied, I no longer scratched my head wondering if
people were really seeing these things, and if they were
genuinely strange or just misperceptions. I now know, with as
much certainty as I can muster, that UFOs are real, and that
they are not mundane. I haven't yet made the leap to believing
that they really come from outer-space, but by golly, there
really is something up there that shouldn't be, and the
scientists and academics are wrong to ignore it. I tried to make
a difference in some small way, promoting cases I thought were
valid, providing channels of communication for pro- and anti-
ufologists to find common ground, and goading members of the
press to take a longer look. But in the end I just lost the
energy and drive needed to keep up the attack. I told myself,
"My work here is done", and moved on.

What _kept_ me out was mainly a gradual worsening of my wife's
health, coupled with a steady stream of family problems,
distractions, etc. My move to Show Low was partly designed to
remedy several of those problems, including getting my wife out
of the blistering heat for the summer.

Why am I back? Well, again, let me stress, I'm _not_ really
"back". I'm just looking in. My one little project has gone up
in smoke, literally, so I won't be an active investigator. I
really do think I'm just going to shrink back into the
background and watch you guys carry on your fight. And I just
wanted to be able to say hi to my old buds like Kalani and Bruce
and Stanton and Stan. Hi again guys!
