Mr. Kurtz is a brilliant example, like B.F. Skinner, of how one can be so terribly, terribly right, and at the same time be so woefully, regrettably wrong. Dr. Skinner, the classic psychiatric behaviorist (and probably a _favorite_ of Kurtz, I'd wager), was right that human beings could be conditioned to do anything a 'conditioner' might desire, but dreadfully wrong regarding whether human beings _should_ be conditioned at all (at _least_ without informed consent). Behaviorist doctrine means patent disrespect for an individual. As fine a man as Kurtz 'may' be, he's still a great example of how much the world is improved by most funerals. His "Committee for the Silly and Insentient Commitment of Obdurate Persons" is evidence enough. His 'pawl' works in reverse.
