Hi Bill,

Mantell wasn't at Godman field, Fort Knox. They were about to
fly past it, to the east of Godman, when they got the call from
Godman tower, on orders from Colonel Hix the base commander, to
turn left and to the southwest and try and intercept the object.

Mantell, and his flight of three were flying back from Marietta
Georgia on their way to Standiford Field in Louisville,Ky. They
never landed at Godman.
One of the four continued on to Standiford because he was low on
fuel. The other two followed Mantell for a short time however
Mantell eventually left the two behind and climbed for the

Earlier I read mention of the aircraft being full of hundreds of
little holes or not full of holes. Either way it's nothing
The F-1 one was an aluminum aircraft fastened together with 7-8
thousand flush headed and countersunk rivets - [to lessen
aerodynamic drag - that likely would have pulled their heads
through their aluminum sheeting upon impact.
I think the F-51 spiraled to the ground rather than spun-in
because of the wing separation due to high wing loading forces
and because of the attitude in which it struck the ground.
But that's just my opinion.
