Scoop Marks?

Subject: Scoop Marks?

My wife recently healed from a prolonged bout with a terrible
skin rash that covered her face, arms and legs. There were many
treatments over the course of at least one year. Among many
other treatments, she finally ended up getting injections of
steroids and antibiotics into each infected area.

About a week later, and as she said, "over night", she developed
a dime-size scoop mark, about 1/4 inch deep, on her left forearm.
This dimple literally appeared in less than 48 hours.

The thing really is weird looking. The doctors told her that in
cases of prolonged skin infection, the skin is eaten away in the
body's attempt to heal the infection. It is quite common, they
say, and can happen even with infected bug-bites, and even when
the patient doesn't know the infection exists. The dimple
looks, well, exactly like web pictures of scoop marks... like it
was created with a mellon-baller.

Frankly, I have not read much about scoop marks. I've always
taken it somewhat on faith that these things are inexplicable,
and of course, associated with abduction. Suppose someone gets a
bug-bite, scratches and ignores it, it later develops infection,
and then seemingly without explanation - over night - the person
awakes with a scoop mark? I know this may not explain all of
them, but it could explain many.

Are there any dermatologists or someone with specific medical
knowledge on the list that can vouch for this?
