Not so amazing: The mentalist known as the Amazing Kreskin
predicted months ago that one of the world's biggest UFO
sightings would take place in Nevada by the end of June =97 and
promised to donate $50,000 to charity if the prediction failed.
This week, he decided Thursday night was the night, and so
hundreds of people turned out to watch the skies in the Nevada
desert near where Kreskin was doing his casino show.

You can probably already guess that the fleet of flying saucers
did not land, and that Kreskin is nevertheless keeping his
money. On Friday, he told me in a phone interview that his stunt
was aimed at pointing out "an avenue of terrorism that hadn't
been thought about ... psychological techniques."

The way Kreskin tells it, the episode illustrates how someone
with ulterior motives could plant the seeds of panic merely by
suggesting that some catastrophic event would occur.

"We amassed a crowd last night... I took about a thousand
witnesses. Literally using the power of suggestion, I created
such an expectancy that 41 people very strongly hallucinated
UFOs in the sky," he told me. You can hear him explain it
himself in this audio clip [link] from KVBC-TV in Las Vegas.

Kreskin also said that a TV crew caught a glimpse of a greenish
glow in the sky just after 11 p.m. =97 and although he doesn=92t think
the glow marked an alien visitation, he nonetheless claims that
the glimpse could qualify as "the largest sighting in history,
because thousands of people saw it on TV."

The bottom line is that Kreskin believes he delivered on his
self- fulfilling prophecy, even though there was nothing
substantial to the "sightings."

"I think I keep my money, and I'll be able to eat," he said.
Note to self: Watch out for the fine print when you're betting
against the Amazing Kreskin. What do you think? [Link]
