The Mothman Prophecies and its based-on-reality chills come to home video

(CP) - In The Mothman Prophecies (Columbia), Richard Gere stars
as a reporter from the Washington Post who journeys to a small
town in West Virginia where the local residents have been seeing
strange visions, in particular a huge, spooky moth-like human

TV's Debra Messing (Will & Grace) saw it, just before the auto
crash she and her husband were involved in. She's quickly
dispatched, leaving Gere to develop a kinship with the town's
fine-looking sheriff, played by Laura Linney.

One subtly creepy moment occurs when Gere, unable to sleep,
decides on a midnight drive from D.C. to Richmond, Va. -
normally about a two-hour trip. Yet he ends up breaking down on
a remote highway at 2 a.m. . .on the far side of West Virginia,
a journey that normally would take seven or eight hours.

Is someone or something drawing him to the town? Is the mothman
a demon? Or is it a spiritual warning of terrible things to

There's a risk to basing your horror on true-life events. On the
one hand, authenticity can boost viewer interest. But it can
also limit the range of the horror if the real events are
actually supposed to be on the record somewhere. Fake, true or
stretched, the result here manages to be suitably
