Hi Eleanor, The day those kids were killed by the National Guard at Kent State University 'picketing' as a viable means of accomplishing anything gradually went the way of the Dodo. There is a clear demarkation point between the size and kind of demonstrations and picketing that was done prior to, and then after, the incident at Kent State. Whether by design or not, Kent State was an accident waiting to happen. At that point in time all you had to do was mix certain elements and you could predict with some degree of accuracy what the outcome of the alchemy would be. Whether by accident or design, the incident at Kent State sent a clear and unmistakable message to the people. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The day National guardsmen gunned down those college kids while peacefully demonstrating on their own campus, a lot of steam was taken out of the growing activist movement in this country. As many folks old enough to remember will tell you, things got pretty ugly in this country for many years. People were so pissed and frustrated they started burning cities down. (Watts, Newark, Chicago etc.) The 'Law & Order' Right Wing backlash caused righteous fear to replace the fervor of commitment in the hearts of many. Can't say as I blame em all either. How many 'causes' are you willing to die for? Best of luck. regards, John Velez, Life-long 'activist'
